Sound trouble after upgrade

Globe and Mail Update

QUESTION: Recently I had a hard drive failure. I purchased and installed a new 40 GB hard drive and reloaded Windows 98 on the new drive. I reloaded drivers for Creative Sound Blaster 16, ATI Rage 128, the monitor, etc. My problem is that the sound card does not work. PCI Multimedia audio device properties does not recognize the brand and shows a code 28 error.

This is strange, because when I reload the drivers from the original disc, everything seems fine. I do get a edit system file message: (folowing files must be added to your SYSTEM.INI file: (Boot) Drivers=CTPNPSCN>DRV and (Drivers32) MSACM.ctadp32=ctapd32.acm;MSCAM.ctfs32.acm. I then hit OK and all seems, well, OK.

I opened up the chassis and reinstalled the card to ensure proper connections but to no avail. HELP!!

ANSWER: I'd suggest re-installing the card. Uninstall any related software through Add/Remove Programs. Then go to System, Device Manager and remove all the entries under Sound/Game Controllers. Then, reboot the PC, the card should be recognized as 'new' hardware and you can then click on 'Have Disk' to load the drivers.
