Foreigners buy up bonds

Foreign investors bought $1.8-billion in Canadian debt instruments in January, while foreign holdings of Canadian stocks remained flat, Statistics Canada said. Canadian investors, meantime, divested a record $3.2-billion in foreign stocks in January as they continued to buy foreign bonds. Foreign holdings of Canadian bonds increased by $638-million in January, offsetting December's divestment. Almost all the buying was concentrated in federal government bonds, Statscan said.
