Iceland grants citizenship to Bobby Fischer

Tokyo — After nearly nine months in a Japanese detention cell, American chess legend Bobby Fischer appears to have cleared the final hurdle on his way to freedom. Iceland's parliament voted Monday to give Mr. Fischer citizenship as he fights an order to deport him from Japan to the United States. Masako Suzuki, one of Mr. Fischer's lawyers, said she expected he would be released within the week.
