Fraser River fishery close to collapse, report says

The lucrative sockeye salmon fishery on B.C.'s Fraser River is on the verge of collapse, says a report by the House of Commons fisheries committee. The unanimous report, released Tuesday, says low spawning numbers last year could mean an end to sockeye fishing on the river by 2008. The committee blasts Fisheries and Oceans Canada for failing to ensure conservation or implement recommendations in previous reports. It says the disaster could have been avoided.
