Wireless network slowed to a crawl

Globe and Mail Update

QUESTION: I am using a D-Link DI-624 wireless router. I am experiencing regular degradation of service. The wireless indicator shows transfer rates down as low as 1 to 5 megabits per second compared to the initial transfer rates of 54 megabits per second. The Dlink website seems to indicate that it is a result of a virus overloading the router and gives a link to a McAfee site for a virus checker. The virus checker does not find anything.

ANSWER: Make sure your wireless network is locked down and/or scan for intruders the next time it slows down. Someone could be using your Internet connection through your wireless router.

Also check the signal strength when things are slow, if it is low and you are in a location where it is usually good it could indicate impending hardware failure on either the router or your wireless card...
