QUESTION: I cannot send/receive e-mail. My ISP requires SSL for e-mail using Outlook Express I have Norton Antivirus 2005 and my ISP states that Norton 2005 is stopping the ISP from recognizing my user name and password when the ISP requires SSL.
I do not have this problem when using an ISP that does not require SSL. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Roger Price
ANSWER: If you want to continue using Norton AntiVirus 2005 and be able to send and receive e-mail with your current ISP, you'll have to disable automatic scanning of incoming and outgoing e-mail in Norton. Automatic e-mail scanning provides an extra layer of virus protection but it is not absolutely necessary as long as you have Auto-protection enabled.
The auto-protection function scans all file operations, so if you do get an infected e-mail Norton should catch it when you try to open it.
To be extra safe, don't open e-mail attachments from inside your e-mail program. Save them first and scan them for viruses before opening them.
Another option is to change to an ISP that does not use SSL.
The extra security of SSL prevents the sending of plain text passwords over the Internet (which is the way most POP3 e-mail send passwords), where they could be intercepted, allowing the interceptor to use your e-mail account.
