CD, DVD drives play music but won't run programs

Globe and Mail Update

QUESTION: I am having problems with my "e" and "f" drives on my Windows XP machine — they will not allow me to download any programs. I have heard that some others have been having the same problems.

I have contacted Compaq and they have not been able to help my. I would think there would be some program to help me...

Compaq has said that both my CD and DVD drives are corrupt. The drivers on my unit are dvd-rom-dd-8000 and lg cd rw ced-8120b. I can play a CD with the "e" drive.

I have tried to restore the unit back to a point when all was well, but I get the same results. Any help you can give me will be appreciated.

ANSWER: It could be either a hardware issue or a software issue. Since both drives were affected at the same time I would suggest a software problem is more likely. An easy way to tell would be to boot to a bootable CD and see if you can run any utilities that are on the CD. Windows is not involved at that point so if it works it must be a software issue and if not it's likely a hardware issue.

If it's a software problem you can do the usual, check for viruses, remove all adware/spyware, run the system file checker and research the problem on-line (or have a tech look at it) but there is a good chance you'll have to run a fresh installation of windows to fix it (often problems with IDE devices require a reload of windows).

If it's a hardware issue you'll have to replace the drives. Audio CDs spin slower than data CDs so it could be an issue with the motor.
