Funeral shooting becomes a study in fearful silence
Toronto As 18-year-old Amon Beckles lay dying on the front steps of a north Toronto church last week, a bullet through his neck, police flooded the area and cordoned off every nearby intersection in under four minutes. Inside the panic-stricken church were dozens of people who knew Mr. Beckles and had joined him to mourn his friend, Jamal Hemmings, 17, shot dead just eight days earlier.
