Alberta restricts cold remedies

Canadian Press

Edmonton — Alberta will follow the lead of the other Prairie provinces by limiting access to cold remedies that are used to make crystal meth.

Alberta will require that cough and cold remedies that contain only the chemical pseudoephedrine must be sold in pharmacies and be stored behind the counter.

Health Minister Iris Evans said she hopes the move will reduce the production and sale of the dangerous and highly addictive drug.

Alberta's move follows announcements Nov. 1 by Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

British Columbia and Ontario are considering similar restrictions.

Police have seen an increase in the last few years in the use of crystal methamphetamine – a drug that has swept into Western Canada from California and is now spreading east into Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes.
