QUESTION: My computer keeps going into sleep mode and reboots but it never starts Windows XP. I've tried pressing the F8 key and it goes to the DOS mode, but when I select to start Windows it just keep trying to restart again and again. What's wrong with the PC?

ANSWER: I believe some operating files are corrupted. All it takes is one little bit to go from 1 to 0 or visa versa to screw things up. Some of my glitches have been fixed by doing a "chkdsk". This is a utility where Windows will check your hard drive for glitches and repair them the best it can. Therefore, what a person needs to do to run this utility is to stay in dos mode or the command prompt. Type in "chkdsk C: /r". It will come back with a question of:
"Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)"
Answer yes. Then close the window. Restart the computer. When it boots up it will go through the process of checking the disk and files. Depending on the size and speed of the disk, it could take all night. So leave the computer on when you go to sleep. See if the problem is solved, if not, continue.
Next, correct the Windows settings of files. If a virus or malware has infected your system, you need to fix the Windows settings or files. Back in dos mode at the command prompt type this "per centSystemRootper cent\System32\restore\rstrui.exe". This engages a system restore. Usually availably from "Start > Programs >Accessories > System Tools > System restore". Also from "Start > Help and support". If you do get a System Restore window up then follow the prompts. If not, then you will need to reinstall windows using the Windows installation disk. A computer professional should handle this because depending what you do you could wipe out the whole drive or just re-write the Window files.
