Wired network fails when wireless computers connected to router

Globe and Mail Update

QUESTION: We have a Linksys Router with 4 ports. Two ports are hard wired to two machines. With these machines we can access the internet. We have 6 other machines (desktops) with Linksys wireless adapter. These we have configured to work with the Router. The problem is: we cannot get all the machines to work at the same time. When one works on the wireless system, all the others (remaining 5) do not work. What have we done wrong?

ANSWER: When you say that when one is on the wireless the others can't connect is it the same computer every time? If so I would suspect a problem with that computer (likely a hardware issue with the wireless adapter or it may have some malware or a virus infecting it). However, if you mean that when any one computer connects wirelessly the others can't connect then I would suggest it's a hardware issue with the router. You can try upgrading the firmware (or downgrading the firmware, I've had that work before even though it is counterintuitive) but if that doesn't work try a new router.

I agree that the problem appears to be at the router, but it may be some weird setting in the configuration, maybe in peer mode instead of infrastructure. I would try setting the router back to defaults and see if all works in that configuration, then adding in encryption and other security measures one at a time, testing between.
