Reynolds brokered Emerson's right turn

OTTAWA — David Emerson sealed his fate with Stephen Harper late last week through a simple handshake in a downtown Ottawa hotel suite, just west of Parliament Hill.It had all happened so quickly. The deal was done over several days, from when the 60-year-old, senior British Columbia minister in Paul Martin's government was approached, and then accepted, a stunning, and very secret proposal: Cross the floor and sit in Mr. Harper's cabinet.
