XP Home won't recognize optical drives

QUESTION: My windows XP Home suddenly won't recognize optical drives. I have a DVD-ROM and a DVD-RW drive, both were fine before — and are actually fine now, as any bootable CD will load up with the PC, and BIOS does recognize they are there. But as soon as XP loads up, they just aren't there, nothing is found in add new hardware, nothing shows in Windows Explorer. I've tried installing new drivers, but it won't let me since Windows says there's no hardware there to install to...

ANSWER: Try running a scan on your computer for viruses and spyware. This is classic malware behaviour...
