Computer shuts itself down randomly, can't run spyware or antivirus scans

Globe and Mail Update

QUESTION: The computer shuts down without a screen or warning (just full power off) at random times. Virus Scans, spybot, even when they run in safe mode, it shuts it down. Help! This is driving me crazy.

Also, is there a way to pinpoint past viruses on disks that I may be bringing into a new computer. I sold my computer in Hawaii, and got a new one back here. I have been adding some of my audio downloads on it, and finding the viruses are returning!

Nick

ANSWER: Sounds like there may be a hardware problem there, either an overheating CPU doing a thermal shutdown to save itself or possibly a defective board or power supply. First thing to check would be to remove the cover and make sure the CPU fan is spinning freely. Some systems will have a section in the "CMOS Setup" which will show CPU temperature and fan speed. If yours does, check to make sure that temperature is within specs.

If you have current virus protection on your new computer, it should warn you of any viruses it may find as it downloads your old files. Selecting "quarantine" or "delete" will prevent them from getting into the new system.
