Checkdisk runs at XP bootup, keeps saying 'error in writing the output log' and tries to reboot

Globe and Mail Update

QUESTION: Hello, I have been a user of Windows XP for many years now, but this is the first problem I have had. I tried to turn my computer on today and it went to the checking-disk screen. It checked the disks but at the end this message came up, "error in writing the output log", then it would take me to a page with the options for safe mode, start Windows normally etc. When I clicked one of these options it would take me back to the beginning of the boot process and repeat the disk-check, etc.

What's the problem? What can I do to fix it?

Scott

ANSWER: It sounds like your hard drive is going or has gone bad. I'd strongly suggest trying to back up your data if you can access the disk. If not, you can try installing the disk as a D: drive in another computer to try and get at the information on it.
