Wireless network won't work after Windows ME reinstallation

Globe and Mail Update

QUESTION: Had a wireless network all set up nicely. The hard drive crashed. Reinstalled everything (Windows ME). Now cannot connect to access point (Netgear). Network is still working though — tried with another laptop (running Windows XP) and connected no problem.

Guess it's my settings?

What to do?

Steve

ANSWER: You could start by ensuring you have all the networking components installed that you need. Start Control Panel, click on Add/Remove Programs, then click on Add/Remove Windows Components, on the left. Scroll down and highlight Network Services, then click Details at the bottom right. Ensure all boxes are checked, and exit properly.

You should also check the TCP/IP settings for your wireless adapter. Start Control Panel, click on Network Connections, then highlight your wireless connection. Click the right mouse button, and select Properties. There is a box in the window called "This connection uses the following items:". Scroll down and highlight Internet Protocol/TCP/IP, then click Properties. The next window displays two automatic configuration options, usually both are checked. If not, the fields for IP address and DNS server must be specified.

If you still cannot connect, then take the laptop, put it next to the ME machine, and set up the ME with the same settings as the laptop.
