Can a digital photo too big for monitor be reduced for easy viewing?

Globe and Mail Update

QUESTION: I received an Out Look Express e-mail with a photo attachment — 2.261KB. When I downloaded and opened it I saw only a portion of a massive picture. I know it is the correct picture. Does the problem originate with the sender or at my end, how can I reduce the attachment so I can see the whole picture and how can I ensure this does not happen again? This has not happened to me before and I will appreciate your assistance. Thank you.

Peter

ANSWER: I see this problem all the time. People, especially on high speed Internet connections, frequently don't realize how large the digital photos are that they are sending out. If the recipient is on a dialup connection downloading such an email can take 10 or more minutes.

If you have a digital camera or a scanner yourself it probably came with software for editing pictures. You can use that to reduce the size of the picture to something that fits the screen. If you don't have that you can download free to from the Internet that will do the same thing. I recommend Picasa from Google. To get it go to www.google.com and click on more>>.

Picasa has an export function that allows you to create a smaller version of the same picture. I'd also recommend this tool to the person who sent you the picture. Picasa helps organize, manage and edit your pictures. You can email photos from within Picasa and before sending Picasa will automatically resize any picture to fit a standard computer monitor. This also significantly reduces the size of the photo file making it easier for the recipient to download the email.
