Virus scan causes system to freeze, then desktop icons disappear

Globe and Mail Update

QUESTION: Upon logging on, my computer performs routine virus scan (VET) and after this a short while the icons on desktop become inactive (unable to open anything) and the start bar also. FOllowing this all the icons and also the bar disappear completely, leaving me unable to open anything. Any Ideas?, i can open stuff if as soon as i log on i open programs while the system performs virus check.

Matt

ANSWER: This may indicate a problem with your antivirus software and that would lead us to immediately suspect a virus.

Stop the antivirus software from running the scan on startup (either using the msconfig utility or by booting into safe mode and opening the antivirus software and turning off the feature in the options or settings). If you connect to the internet through a router you might want to boot into safe mode with networking and run this next step from there.

Next run an on-line virus scan. There are free ones available at http://housecall.antivirus.com and http://www.pandasoftware.com. If you find a virus cleaning it may fix everything. If the virus is gone (or if there wasn't one) and the problem continues uninstall and reinstall the antivirus software or uninstall it and switch to a different product. There is a free one called AVG which I recommend (http://free.grisoft.com).

Good Luck
