Windows XP doesn't detect an external USB floppy diskette drive

Globe and Mail Update

QUESTION: The operating system doesn't detect the external diskette drive. It's a Lacie FDD drive. It plugs into the USB port. I also tried plugging in my Imation memory stick, and it did not detect as well.

Paolo

ANSWER: Assuming the floppy drive and memory stick work in other computers I would suggest you have a hardware problem with that USB port.

To check, go into device manager (right click my computer, click properties, click the hardware tab, click the device manager button) and uninstall all the USB devices, reboot and let the drivers reinstall. If the port still doesn't work it's probably (still not 100 per cent sure though) a hardware problem. You can get PCI cards that give you more USB ports to replace them.
