Windows screensaver won't work

Globe and Mail Update

QUESTION: My screen saver won't work. It is just one of the standard windows screensavers. When I set it to come on after say three minutes it does not come on. Can you please help me?

Thanks,

Ashley

ANSWER: Try to preview the screen saver and others. If it doesn't work it's a software issue and you might be able to fix it with the system file checker (depending on which version of windows you are running).

If the preview works then your problem may be a program that is running in the background making windows think the keyboard and/or mouse are not sitting idle for three minutes. This could be a virus or adware/spyware or it may be something that has been installed. If removing adware/spyware and scanning for viruses doesn't fix the problem click start->run, type msconfig and click OK. Click the startup tab and make a note of all the items with a checkmark in the box. Clear all the checkmarks and click OK. It will prompt you to reboot. After the reboot, if the screensaver works then it's one of those items that is causing your problem. You probably have more running on startup than what you need anyway. Go back into msconfig and gradually add checkmarks until you either have everything you need running (antivirus, maybe a printer monitor, maybe something else) or until you find the one that is interfering with the screensaver.
