Travel writers' guidelines

Globe and Mail Update

Thanks for your interest in writing for Globe Travel. We look forward to receiving your queries, but before you send them please read this information carefully -- it answers frequently asked questions and will help you understand our section.

WHAT MAKES A GLOBE TRAVEL STORY?

  • Globe Travel strives to include features, columns, reviews, briefs and other stories that provide useful, timely and engaging content to our readers.

  • As such, we aim for our stories to have a "peg" — they should relate to something beyond the travel experience itself. For example: A destination that's featured in a new film or bestselling book. A story that offers travel insight on a big-name event, such as the Olympics. Or a feature that's tied to a news story our readers may have seen elsewhere. Our Wednesday section in particular is geared towards travel industry trends and business travel.

  • Stories can also be seasonal, pegged to annual events such as Christmas or March Break.

  • If appropriate, the tone should be that of a local insider — we want our readership to feel the section provides insight and information that can't be found anywhere else.

  • A visually compelling, relevant selection of photos also helps.

HOW DO YOU PITCH TO US?

  • Before you pitch, read the section or visit globeandmail.com/travel to see what kind of stories we're running.

  • We do not accept queries from PR writers or related professions, only from journalists with no vested interests in the stories they query.

  • E-mail editorial queries and low-resolution digital photos to travel@globeandmail.com. We pay $50 and up for freelance photos that we use. Please be advised that it may take several weeks for us to reply.

  • Outline your story idea and your approach (interviews, main points or arguments), writing your query in the same tone that you're proposing for your piece. If you have never written for us before, attach some writing samples.

    EDITORIAL FORMATS AND RATES

Globe travel features generally run anywhere from 400 to 1500 words. The rate of pay will be established once the story is accepted. Features should include "Pack your bags" sidebars; for an example of the sidebar format, CLICK HERE.

One of the best ways to pitch to us is through one of our regular columns:

  • BITS: Briefs that appear every week throughout the section. Bits cover a wide range of topics, from new hotel openings and art exhibits to unique tours and travel products. They usually run from 50 to 100 words. We pay $25 per bit. For an example of the format, CLICK HERE.

  • SLEEPOVER: Our hotel review column. Usually runs in the Wednesday section at around 800 words. Writers are responsible for arranging photos. Pays $250. For an example of the format, CLICK HERE.

  • TRIPPING: A fun, thoughtful, moving or scary 400 to 600 words on exceptional travel experiences. Submissions should tell a story -- think riveting dinner-table talk. Pays $100 and runs on Saturdays. For an example of the format, CLICK HERE.
