CD, DVD drives won't show up in XP Pro's My Computer

Globe and Mail Update

QUESTION: I have a Windows XP Professional edition PC. I tried to switch my CD and DVD drive to slave and master, and think I set them both to slave. Now neither one works, and my computer does not show either drive when I open My Computer . I tried to switch them back to original position but still nothing works, please help.

Dave Zehring

ANSWER: It's probably just a cabling or jumper issue, since you have re-arranged things. You can do it either of 2 ways, depending on whether you have a "Cable Select" cable (usually colour-coded or marked master or slave at the connectors. If you have a CS cable, then both devices should be jumpered as "CS", and the position on the cable where the drive is plugged in will determine whether it's Master or Slave. If you have a normal "straight-through" cable, then one drive should be jumpered as Master and the other as slave.

What often happens in these circumstances is that the jumpers on the drive will be in conflict with the connectors on the cable - make sure what kind of cable you're using, and where the devices are plugged in.
