What do you do when you get a SMART drive warning?

Globe and Mail Update

QUESTION: SMART drive failure warning. I get a message that says "Warning, SMART has detected that a hard drive failure may be imminent. Please back up your data immediately. I have a dell Latitude laptop D400.

Carl Carco

ANSWER: That particular message usually means exactly what it says - The drive has internal diagnostics, and those diagnostics have sensed that the drive is failing. Immediately back up your data and prepare to replace the Hard Drive.
