Kenneth Thomson and his wife, Marilyn, were standing by themselves and looking perfectly unbillionaire-like at a reception at Toronto's Roy Thomson Hall a few years ago. I bounded over to say hello and the conversation somehow turned to London, where they had apartment. I asked whether they were still regular visitors. "We don't go very often," Marilyn said. I asked why, expecting an anodyne remark about the strain of overseas flights or grandchild commitments at home.
