Can a laptop with a small hard drive be supplemented with an external USB drive?

Globe and Mail Update

QUESTION: I have an older Toshiba Satellite 4060XCDT. It is fine except for the very small hard drive (6 GB). Can I hook up an external hard drive to it thru the USB connection (only has USB 1.1). Please let me know of any problems or limitation in doing this.

Thank you very much.

Ron

ANSWER: An external drive will certainly work with your configuration, however you may find it to be frustratingly slow.

USB 1.1 has a bandwidth of approximately 11 megabits per second. The newer version, USB 2.0, operates at approximately 480 megabits per second, a 44x speed increase over USB 1.1.

The way to get around this is to find a USB 2.0 card for your laptop. New laptops come with USB 2.0 ports, so it may not be that easy to find, but they should still be around.
