Created by the Brazilian government in 1942 and privatized in 1997, Companhia Vale do Rio Doce has grown into the largest metals company in the Americas and would become one of the world's top three diversified miners if its planned acquisition of Canada's Inco Ltd. is successful.
The $17.2-billion all-cash offer, announced Friday, would create the world's largest nickel company and cement CVRD's presence in a North American country it has been trying to penetrate for some time.
