Eye Sore from Dog Pound, Alberta, Canada writes: Nobel laureate Ernst Hemingway believed that a 'double dicho' was at the very heart of his classic 'The Old Man and the Sea': 'Man can be destroyed but not defeated. Man can be defeated but not destroyed.' Courageous folk like Ron Rosenes may be destroyed by AIDS, i.e., killed bodily; but they'll not be defeated by it whilst they live.

Gerry Pankhurst from westport, Canada writes: Here we go again. The G&M dignifies the imbecilic alias Eye sore from Dog Pound (#1) to print a silly comment. If that is the best you can do this particular subject is headed nowhere.

Vickky Angstrom from Calgary, Canada writes: Hi Ron - *I can't believe there are still people who think this is a gay disease, or caused by some moral flaw. And then make the merciless leap to not extending any help to AIDS sufferers.* It seems to me there is a larger question at stake here about ending the patriarchy altogether. Whether it is African women subject to whatever sexual whim their husband happens to have at the moment, or Stephen Harper's willingness to waste huge amounts of time and energy on gay marriage while doing nothing about AIDS, the old ways of men and organized religion are a major threat to the perpetuation of the species. Funny how those Harper-types always have such a hard time with unconditional love. Me too, but then, I never claimed to be Christian.

K Tameling from Okanagan, Canada writes: I am wondering about the drugs in which the infected patients are using to cope with the pain and loss of appetite etc. Are they helping or hurting the patient, are there alternate forms of more natural pain inhibitors available? Why are we not exploring the effectiveness of these alternative medicines with more assertiveness?

Michael Richardson from Oakville, Colombia writes: I do wish I had had the chance to ask a question. My question, and I think it goes to the heart of the global pandemic of AIDS and the difference between the diseases spread amongst developed and developing nations, is: What are we to do with the Catholic church, who in Africa, where this disease is most severe, are often the sole providers of social services, including health and family conselling, education, and moral and religious guidance, and who advocate strictly against the use of any form of contraception, including condoms, when clearly grassroots education programs do not have even close to the manpower and established community base the Catholic church has, to then instruct for prevention and treatment? These poor souls are preaching abstinence to poeple who often die before there 30th birthday. Please, if you want to start somewhere, start with the Pope in Rome and tell those kind hearted servants of God, they are doing communities there a grave diservice by refusing to change doctrine. It is amazing the power of Religion to blind those so profoundly as to transform the will to do good into the weapons of death. I have seen it with my own eyes, as I spent 4 months in Kenya and Tanzania meeting with community leaders, where 1 in 3 poeple have AIDS in rural areas and yet the teachers still preach the myth of creation and AIDS as the wrath of God on the sinner. It is a true holocaust of the Catholic negro and I cannot believe the world stands by and lets it be!

Eye Sore from Strathmore, Alberta, Canada writes: I hope Gerry Pankhurst (Poster #2) will not be allowed to drop insults ('silly' and 'imbecilic') on me with impunity for having the temerity (in GP's eyes) to salute Ron Rosenes for his work in AIDS awareness, even as Ron himself battles the disease, in my own way - simply because it's not GP's way. Try not to be so bigoted, GP.

el gordo from Canada, Canada writes: It's not a gay disease any more than lung cancer is a straight disease. What they do have in common is that they are both preventable. In view of that, why should I or anyone else spend more than 2 seconds a month thinking about medicines or contributions etc. when prevention 15 years ago as well as today is the REAL cure.

lauraine baillie from Canada writes: The Aids epidemic is terrible but can someone tell me why we are not protesting the Catholic Church who are in part or even the reason for the spread in the poor countries? They will not allow the use of condoms!!! They brainwash those poor people so that they will no use condoms (a sin??) that would save lives. The Church must change their old ways, outdated and condeming people to death. They must be told to change by the world powers in order for this disease to be controlled thank you lauraine

matt keen from Calgary, Canada writes: Harper didn't go because he didn't want to get booed at a world event. I don't blame him. I don't agree with the policies (no to gay marriage and safe injection sites), but it's disingenous to complain about his absence by pointing to the prominence of the event without acknowleding the equally prominent negative reception he would receive, and even sillier to ascribe his decision to some other motivation, like a lack of respect for those with AIDS.
