Lugo eyes Jays

Globe and Mail Update

Los Angeles — Julio Lugo has a message for the Toronto Blue Jays: Call me.

"I heard they really tried to get me at the trade deadline, and I hope they come at me hard," Lugo, considered the best free-agent shortstop on the market this winter, said Saturday night only minutes after he and the rest of the Los Angeles Dodgers were eliminated from the National League Division Series.

"I've always liked that city [Toronto] and I like playing in that ballpark. I love that place."

So he should. Lugo is a career .376 hitter at the Rogers Centre, with six home runs and 15 runs batted in.

Lugo, a right-handed hitter who will turn 31 next month, was traded to the Dodgers by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at the July 31 trade deadline for a pair of prospects, Joel Guzman and Sergio Pedroza.
