Report: Torre to remain Yankees skipper

Globe and Mail Update

New York — The Joe Torre saga has taken a different, more sensible turn. The New York Post reported Tuesday that the New York manager will be retained.

A front-page headline "Joe's Safe" leads into a Post story that says that owner George Steinbrenner who was rumoured to be on the verge of firing Torre after their elimination from the postseason on Saturday has decided, or has been convinced, that changing managers won't solve the club's problems.

Torre also has been telling friends that it was looking good that he will return for the final year of his contract worth $7-million (U.S.).

It is expected to be announced Tuesday.

Several players have come out in support of Torre, including Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera, foundation players of four Yankee World Series champions.

Steinbrenner was furious that the Yankees were eliminated in four games by the Detroit Tigers in the best-of-five American League Division Series and sources reported in the Daily News on Sunday that Torre would be replaced by former Yankee manager and player Lou Piniella.

The story did leave it open that Steinbrenner might be talked out of the move and it appears to be what has happened. The Yankees' early exit cost the club about $30-million.

One thing the Torre story has done is keep the New York Mets, who open the National League Championship Series Wednesday at Shea Stadium against the St. Louis Cardinals, in the background.
