Building a better blogroll for the Bubble

dummies

Throughout the 17 month history of media executives being certain that they know what a blog is, plenty of media enthusiasts -- the ones who've known what a blog is for at least 18 months -- have doubted the ability of mainstream outlets to live up to the deranged spontaneity nurtured online. Well, by most of those standards, the thing you're reading is definitely a blog -- and, as a result, is guaranteed to be a little bit messier than what you've been accustomed to reading beneath a globeandmail.com banner.

None of the posts are guaranteed to be in finished form when you first see them. Technical quirks and typing mistakes are bound to happen, and may even get fixed before you can hit refresh. Factual errors will be corrected as swiftly as possible, and acknowledged when necessary. Reader participation is welcome, but not required.

You may be able to help with assembling a list of all those other Ontario municipal election websites worth a regular visit. Candidates who are keeping some form of online journal -- ideally, one with a proper feed for syndication -- should submit those details. Basic campaign sites are great, too, but better if they contain content or context that would be of interest to the widest possible audience.

Blogs dedicated to news and comment on a particular city are a novel development of the last several years. The ones that appear likely to generate material for Campaign Bubble are listed below, so that you can check them out for yourself. And if there are sites missing from this list, send in the address or leave a comment.

Toronto: Spacing Votes is the companion to the latest election issue of Spacing, covering public space issues; Torontoist and blogTO incorporate politics; Reading Toronto takes a more introspective approach. Toronto Sun reporter Rob Granatstein is running X Marks the T.dot. Edward Keenan of Eye Weekly has one, too.  And all stories from Toronto Community News are feeding into decisiontoronto2006.

GTA: A blog crew is assigned to covering individual cities in Durham Region; blog alter egos for reporters in York Region include Barbs & Jabs and Joe Voter. There's also a Clarington Watchdog.

Ottawa: All Things Ottawa Municipal Election 2006! is one; The Hall Monitor is another; and the Ottawa Citizen have their own Curbs and Gutters.

London: The London Fog ("Documenting the continuing mismanagement of London, Ontario by its people and municipal government") ...

There's more out there, right? Right? You tell me.
