Ontario privacy commissioner wants Internet changes

Canadian Press

TORONTO — Ontario Privacy Commissioner Ann Cavoukian warns that on-line fraud is threatening to cripple e-commerce on the Internet.

Because of the growth of Internet fraud, she said, the identity infrastructure of the Web is no longer sustainable.

Ms. Cavoukian will hold a news conference in Toronto on Wednesday to outline what could, and should, be done to foster the development of a universal identity system.

She will be joined by two senior Microsoft executives from the United States at the news conference, which will kick off the International Association of Privacy Professionals' annual conference.

Ms. Cavoukian issued a warning in early September for people to keep close tabs on their personal digital assistants, cellphones and laptops to protect the sensitive information inside.

She said that as such devices gain popularity, users need to learn how to keep their personal information confidential by such measures as more complex passwords and stronger data encryption.
