A senator fights to shed his ‘macaca' moment

LYNCHBURG, VA. — Senator George Allen travelled yesterday to this pleasant town in central Virginia named for the family that made lynching famous, fighting to save his own political neck. Until a few months ago, the affable one-term Republican and darling of the Christian right was seen as a slam-dunk winner in the Nov. 7 midterm election.
