Protesters watch as first flight leaves Toronto's island airport

Canadian Press

Toronto — The first flight on a controversial new air route has taken off from Toronto's City Centre airport, leaving a number of protesters voicing opposition on the waterfront below.

Porter Airlines plans to run 10 round-trip weekday runs to Ottawa — the very first left on time at 7 o'clock this morning.

A rally opposing the new flights has drawn at least 30 placard-carrying protesters this morning (at Bathurst Street and Queen's Quay).

The event, organized by the group Community Air, did not prevent any travellers from getting to the airport.

Spokesman Bill Freeman says they're opposed to the flights because of pollution and safety concerns.

Porter Airlines chief executive officer Robert Deluce says it's a great day for travellers looking for competition and convenience when they fly.
