Richard Podlecki from Edmonton, Canada writes: Dear Dr, Shapiro,
About tree years I was diagnoses with colleen cancer, they removed 32 cm on my colleen and did a test on my leafiness’s. Surgeon and oncologist informed that all cancer was removed and leafiness’s were not effect by cancer. After the surgery I had very painful chemotherapy, two months later they found cancer on my liver and my oncologist strongly recommended removing 75% of my liver. When I met surgeon he presented me some MRI’s document and show me the cancer, next his question was if I want to give him my liver for AIDS test. I and my wife found this comment was very improper and unethical. At that time my oncologist and surgeon gave me only 6 month of life. I stopped believe them, and both lost my trust.
Today I fill ok, I am not loosing wait and only sometime I have a liver pain. I came back to work after 8 months. I am father of two beautiful daughters (both university students - one study to be hearth surgeon, the younger likes to finish bossiness). As you see I have to be strong for my kids.
Tell me your opinion and give me your advice.

sandra laliberte from hanley, Canada writes: I read Dr. Shapiros comments on womens right to choice when it comes to reconstruction with breast implants. This is quite frankly exactly what the manufacturers of breast implants set out to do with physicians as stated in a Burston Marstellar document that stated we have to start a grass roots campaign to get women shouting they have a right to choice. In the situation right now women not only do not have this right nor should they, it is not for them to yell choice when it is up to our health regulatory agency in Canada to demand that these medical devices are safe. This has yet to be done, what health canada did instead was grant these two manufacturers Inamed and Mentor licences to use women as guinea pigs for 10 years, not even starting for another year to prove they are safe. Women have to understand that the approval just given to these compamies was not a seal of safety on the devices. So while Dr. Shapiro advocates choice she would be better served being honest with the women who are asking legitimate health questions. Women will never know if they are safe until health canada is forced to do what they were mandated to do and that is to protect canadians from harmful medical devices and drugs, until the lobbyists are stopped and the companies are forced to not be able to submit data that only benefits them canadians lifes are at risk every day, all so some greedy manufacturers, and plastic surgeons could make a buck of women by telling them they aren't complete without breast implants in. Until the Doctors are willing to state themselves that they will take full responsibilty if a woman becomes ill or injured I would run from them, even they won't put themselves on the line that far, that is a redflag. If these implants are so safe why would the FDA put panel members on who had a vested interest in these being approved, then come out with a lame excuse of we couldn't find anyone else. Canadian women deserve the truth!

I put the FDA by accident but mind you they did exactly the same thing as Health Canada with some of the same so called experts as used in Canada.- Posted 10/02/07 at 8:46 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Well said. Medical professionals who have such a prominent voice should be using it to ask relevant questions of Health Canada and industry, not to promote unsafe products to a vulnerable public.- Posted 03/03/07 at 5:28 AM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

S W from canada, Canada writes: I'd LOVE TO know why Dr. Marla couldn't give one questioner advice on a good cancer centre. Does she send her private patients that develop cancer to a website or is her book referred to all? Anyone out there with cancer, please read the writings of Dr. John McDougall. We're being fed a line of crapola from these doctors here in the west. In the 50's and 60's doctors advertized for cigarette companies. Now in 2007 we have doctors with cancer advocating cancer cures and treatments that are BIG business for these medical goods corporations. And Dr. Marla had to go to the US for treatment! Why is that? Why weren't her treatments here, such as they are? Read Dr. John Mcdougall. They aren't treatments, they are new commodites that are being highy marketed. Dr. Marla is a disgrace and should be ashamed of herself!

S W from canada, Canada writes: IF Marla wanted to be really helpful to the public why didn't she write her book about prevention instead of her vanity bruised, 'me the hero', family expose? Why just the lip service to prevention? Wendy Mesley, not a doctor and her documentary via CBC called "The Race for the Cure" is far more helpful at getting at what might be the real causes of cancer. Odd that a lay person could so out-inform one with a medical background. Bravo and thank you Wendy! Marla! Go home and continue baking your fat-filled calorie-laden biscotti. Over-educated egg-head! You are simply a high end cheer leader for the pharmaceutical corporate rat pack. Some accomplishment there!
