Spying suspect plans fight to stay in Canada

A man accused of being a Russian spy will not leave Canada without a fight, his defence lawyer told The Globe and Mail yesterday, amid continuing secrecy about the events that led to the 40-year-old's detention. The suspect, whom authorities refer to by his alleged alias, Paul William Hampel, is to appear at the Federal Court in Montreal today. A Canadian Security Intelligence Service official is expected to testify as the case begins in earnest, after being delayed last week.
