As we observe, this year, the 500th anniversary of the New World being named "America" by a German cartographer, we shouldn't forget that for most of the indigenous population the last five centuries have, unfortunately, meant continued poverty and suffering.
In fact, only four years after the publication of the map in 1507, Antonio de Montesinos, a Dominican friar, gave a sermon in Santo Domingo in which he decried the cruelty and injustice inflicted on the local Indians.
