Italian government loses crucial vote

ROME — Italy's government lost a crucial vote in the Senate on Wednesday over foreign policy, including its military mission in Afghanistan — a result that could lead to its resignation. Foreign Minister Massimo D'Alema said earlier that the government should resign if it could not win the vote. However, the vote was not a confidence vote, and therefore was not binding.
