OTTAWA — Casinos give you odds of 2 to 1 or 3 to 1. Lotteries give you odds of 1,000,000 to 1. When California introduced a limited-ticket lotto game last year, it proclaimed "the best odds" in state lottery history -- 500,000 to 1.
For the lucky "1" in these transactions, though, the pots grow bigger and bigger. California's Mega Millions lotto game has a $150-million (U.S.) jackpot this week, rising by $20-million a week.
