  1. Nikki Rollins from Toronto, Canada writes: I agree, you can’t take everything that is said on the web for truth, especially with sites that rate contractors. However, there is no mention in this article on how to FIND a good contractor. In that case, I would like to say that web can be a great tool.
Searching for a local contactor in a web directory is useful, and can be helpful if - as Mike says - you do you homework. Look at the contactors portfolio on line, see if there are references, if they have won awards, have up front pricing and / or detailed quotes.
Meet them before deciding and compare offers. They are not all the same.
Don’t assume that because someone loved them you will too, this is your home and you have to take part in the renovation ideas, suggestions and preferences.

Yes we've seen the same here - many trade search type web sites fail to deliver the bang for buck for both consumers and trades are deliver no more value than searching or advertising through the local newspaper classifieds or business directories. BUT finding a tradesperson here in Australia is now very easy - with BANGitUP the average time to find a local builder or tradesmen interested in your job is three minutes. Customers get back a report detailing the trades insurnance; references, accreditations etc. http://www.bangitup.com/component/option,com_wrapper/Itemid,33/ There are a couple of testimonials below (hundreds more on the bangitup.com site) From a builder or trades point of view over 70% of the population are now on-line (in Australia) and online:print advertising costs at about 1/10th. Where do you put your hard earned ad dollar??? With Bangitup - Builders/ trades pay for a guaranteed number of job leads based on thier profile (trades; contract values; how far they wish to travel).
