Marshall Dillon from Campbellville, Canada writes: Get a Life, this is war, not the Salvation Army. The Germans and Japanese were just perfect citizens in WWII and African atrocities are ones that nightmares are made from.
Canadians are doing their best to rest this poor coountry from the grip of oppression, but it not our responsibility to be policing how the natives treat their prisioners... ifthat were the case, how would any war end?
Let's concentrate on winning the fight and getting home and leave these bleeding heart stories alone. I am sure the 6MM Jews could tell stories that would leep the whole world spinning for decades.. TIme to move on and get the job done or invoke the Barry Goldwater approach and blast them all into eternity.. then there would be no stories to tell!- Posted 24/04/07 at 7:30 AM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Peter Pecek from Suriname, writes: Marshall, this poor fellow was just having a nap when our guys arrested him. He was not read his rights and his lawyer was not present. He was not guilty of any crime. Does he believe in Taliban Church? If you torture him long enough he may admit to anything - just like in the times of Spanish Inquisition - the witch is allways guilty.........Our guys are VISITORS in that country and he is at home - did he posses two bullets in his pocket? maybe. So what? he should have asked our soldiers for passport and VISA, names and other permits and if they are registered with local police......
He has more rights to arrest our soldiers than us arresting him!
the beatings and sufferings of this poor guy are Mr.Harper responsibility and us supporting this Invasion for never specified mission and GOALS......- Posted 24/04/07 at 8:37 AM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Don Christie from Ottawa, Canada writes: Marshall Dillon writes: "TIme to move on and get the job done ".
I'm very interested to hear what "get the job done" means. What is our GOAL? I have never heard a clear, concise answer to this question from anyone (especially our glorious leaders:) )
Can you help?- Posted 24/04/07 at 8:57 AM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Black Adder from Toronto, Canada writes: Marshall Dillon, how exactly are we, according to you 'winning the fight' by capturing a young man, simply because he fit the profile of being a male of a that age group? How are we 'doing our best' in this instance? That's a very low expectation you have set.
How many people have been captured this way and how many people have heard of these types of stories? How can we 'win the fight' if we are turning the 'natives' as you call them, against our soldiers?
It is pathetic how in your zeal to support our troops, you completely forget that these 'natives' are, like you, human beings (a salient point also missed by the Taliban).- Posted 24/04/07 at 8:58 AM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Sivaram Velauthapillai from Toronto, Canada writes: Obviously people like Marshall Dion want to implement a totalitarian regime in Afghanistan. You win the war all right, but with no rights, no functional justice system, nothing worth living for. You know that someone doesn't know what they are talking about when they keep invoking the Holocaust argument. Only an idiot would compare a massive atrocity like that to present day Afghanistan but then again it doesn't surprise me since supporters of bogus wars have nothing else to argue in favour...

Richard Roskell from Naramata, Canada writes: One wonders what those who turn a blind eye to Canada's current complicity in torture will say when the other shoe drops. The implications in this matter are obvious, aren't they? Canadian reporters can speak to torture victims like Mr. Wali, because fortunately they are still alive to tell the tale. But the Afghan security forces stand equally accused of murder, by the U.N., the U.S. State Department and the Afghan Human Rights Commission. How many cases exist where the victims are dead and buried in an unmarked grave?

Alexandra A from Ottawa, Canada writes: I am not sure what Marshall Dillon is actually suggesting in his comment. he talks about Canadians not being responsible for the transfer to ntl authorities, as "it not our responsibility to be policing how the natives treat their prisioners" but at the same time talks about the war and how we should get the job done. Well, I think that the job done, whatever it means, includes being able to ensure respect of human rights in Afghanistan. I think that is and was one of the reasons why we went there in the first place. Accordingly, we should make sure that these people are treated with dignity.
On the other hand, I must say that even though I am no conservative, I think this MInister has done a good job and that the staff that informs him shall be fired not him because I have a feeling that he is not being well adviseed by his staff. Hang on in there Mr. O'Connor!- Posted 24/04/07 at 5:04 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Pamphleteer . from Canada writes: Marshall Dillon: I don't usually engage in name calling or ad hominem attacks, but in rare cases it might be warranted. This is one such case.
You are an idiot.
One cannot expect to transform Afghanistan into a robust democracy, where the rule of law is protected and human rights are respected, by beating the local population into submission. This article clearly illustrates that not all Taliban suspects are in fact Taliban. Every prisoner deserves to be treated with respect and dignity during the judicial process. These are rights that are protected in Afghan national law and international law.
We have every reason to believe that the Canadians are acting professionally and with honour when they handle prisoners. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Afghan officials. That has to be remedied.- Posted 25/04/07 at 1:12 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Udom Thongpai from Victoria, Canada writes: Full credit to Mr. Smith, but why does it take a Canadian reporter to find this out? We have thousands of soldiers over there and none of them were sent to find out what happens to detainees, despite it being an issue earlier. The only answer can be that cooperating in torture has been a deliberate government policy. And now that's it's out in the open what do we get? Lie after lie after lie.
