An uncompromising Romanian film about a student who helps a friend obtain an illegal abortion in Romania in 1987, took the 60th anniversary Palme d'Or. The low-budget, artful and downbeat drama proved that if the Cannes film festival catered to Hollywood glitz as never before this year, it still hasn't lost its dark European soul.
