Personal: Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin was born Oct. 7, 1952, in St. Petersburg (then called Leningrad), the only child of a factory foreman and his wife. He and his wife, Lyudmila, a specialist in foreign languages, have two daughters, Katya and Maria.
Education: Mr. Putin studied law at Leningrad State University between 1970 and 1975.
