Mark H from Columbus, IN, United States writes: I think the first question to ask is 'what levels are things present?' Is it PPM, PPB, PPT? Then. what level were these studies done at that showed issues?
The precautionary principle can be an extortion tool - how about a little reasoned science, first? Some data in a 'science' article wouldn't hurt anything, either. Constant fear. The hardcore environmentalist's best friend.- Posted 02/07/07 at 3:11 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Dave Little from In Ontario's poor excuse for a Forest City, Canada writes: What, you expect Environment Minister Laurel Broten to act on a pressing need to test for more chemicals. Are you out of your mind, she is a Liberal and can only lie about what she might do, or not do!! Remember, Ontario was only 20 years behind the Europeans and 10 years behind the American in testing for LEAD. You know, they said having Lead in the water dulls the senses and makes you complacent thats probably why she never thought to tell us about the polluted water, and as for the tories, forget them they still can't admit that they had any thing to do with Walkerton, NOT MIKEY, no way, get out.
Wakeup people ...................................... mother Earth is sending us another message ......... oh yes, and Global Warming is a myth. Remember to put the frog into cool water first and then turn on the stove.- Posted 02/07/07 at 3:32 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Yvonne Wackernagel from Woodville, Canada writes: 'and run-off from antibacterial soaps and shampoos.' Evidence published in the journal of Environmental Science and Technology (Vo.39, 2005) demonstrated that washing with anti-bacterial soap in municipally-treated chlorinated tap water exposes consumers to significant quantities of chloroform, a cancer causing substance. Chloroform can be inhaled or absorbed by the skin and is to be avoided at all costs. It goes on to talk about Triclosan which produces deadly dioxins and Dioxin is linked with the development of a variety of cancers, including prostate and melanoma (Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (46), 2004. PLEASE NOTE THAT A LOT OF THE LARGE HOSPITALS REQUIRE YOU USE THE PRODUCT GIVEN TO YOU (Antibacterial Soap) BEFORE YOUR OPERATION.

Johann der Kanuck from France writes: But Yvonne Wackernagel ...in all seriousness - the water supplies here and in London and perhaps in Canada have increasing levels of cocaine and anti-depressants which is a sad reflection on the population.
Already here there is a move away from anti-bacterial anything as the evidence of it's effectiveness is slanted at best.- Posted 02/07/07 at 4:24 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

G Money from Hamilton, Canada writes: I worked at a major local Hospital here until February of this year and occiassionally I would administer chemo to patients in my care. Chemo comes to me prepackaged by our pharmacists and they have to wear crazy protective gear just to handle the stuff. I put it into someone as a medicine and their excretia becomes toxic for a period of time. This excretia, though very dangerous, especially to women of reproductive age, is just flushed down a regular toilet and out into the system/bay depending on the weather. But don't worry! We flush the toilet three times and eveything is good again!

Mariposa Belle from Leacockland, Canada writes: Another article which shows that drinking, eating and breathing will eventually result in death.
How our ancestors survived the brutality of the Dark Ages without authoritative reports such as this, I will never know.- Posted 02/07/07 at 4:38 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Whodat Singer from St. Catharines, Canada writes: 'Jim Smith, the province's chief drinking-water inspector, said Ontario has one of the most sophisticated systems in the world to protect its drinking water'
What was it the auditor said the other day about Ontario Ministries. They talk a good game but don't follow through.- Posted 02/07/07 at 4:57 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Stude Ham from Outremont, Canada writes:
That was an impressive list of chemicals found in our waters. how was the list able to find lead but not fluoride or scotch? now if our drinking waters do include scotch please let us know because an awful lot of people will be very pleased to hear about that.
In the meantime, should we all get our brita filters to work even harder and our gas masks resealed for the summer smog and our furnaces and car exhaust fitted with materials that will shred the onslaught of global warmers? or should we all gleefully fork over gobs and gobs of our moneys to the government and let them use it for some project supposedly to better safeguard their sources of revenue... errr .... environment.... yah ... environment! (whew)?
it's really scary to live in these dangerous times where just slaking thirst or breathing air or eating imported chinese foods or getting touched by the sun's rays can cause such health disasters.... let alone crossing busy downtown intersections while blindfolded.- Posted 02/07/07 at 4:57 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

michele martin from Canada writes: Dr. Sicheri you have been making headlines, over the cancer rates in Windsor, no wonder, Great lake effect EH!
the fish here are washed up on shore, you could no doubt walk on the water in the bay.
I noticed a story the G an M on children's mental health , gee I wonder if there's a connection. Medical waste, you would know, well perhaps!
Where does all that CHEMO end up, gee I wonder why we have a cancer increase, none of us should be sick, depressed, mental health in children, how can that be? they are all on low dose Prozac so on.
A wise man once wrote, they don't care if you tell the public the dangerous chemical's in water are going to give your children learning disabilities, as long as you do NOT mess with men's ability to get an erection or, and, tell all women the chemicals are going to make your breast sag... PEOPLE WAKE UP, your not going to BE HERE, your breat will be in a bucket on the hospital floor if you do not clean this mess up, IT is to BIG for the TOO BIG to FIX box.. lake front property values! real shame. what a crash that will be, human health is always dead last, we cannot WAIT any longer, feel like we are all up ships creek, without a paddle
Chemicals , medical waste, are YES in your tap water, on the plants you water, food , air, the per cautionary principal, is not junk science , it may be the only way the obese children, will have a fighting chance.- Posted 02/07/07 at 4:59 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

rick garrick from thunder bay, Canada writes: You know, just a few days ago people were posting here that all Aboriginal people should come join the good life, come join western society and it's spend, spend, consume, consume culture.
Now we're starting to see that maybe this western culture isn't all it's cut out to be.
Maybe we should be the one's joining the Aboriginal people's traditional ways of living in harmony with the land.
They lived here for tens of thousands of years and the land was like a paradise when Columbus arrived.- Posted 02/07/07 at 6:25 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

brian bishop from Brantford, Canada writes: Mark H
Does it really matter what levels are present, the chemicals shouldn't be there in the first place.
I haven't drank Ontario tap water for years, I use a two stage filtering system that removes more than just the offensive smell & taste. And I certainly wouldn't use a Brita or drink water from those big blue jugs you see everyone buying.
It's funny my dogs kidney stones disappeared within a year of adding my filtering system six years ago.- Posted 02/07/07 at 7:07 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

I'm new to these pages, but I gotta say, Yvonne, that YOUR life must be just on mountain of a conspiracy to be overcome after another. How do you ever even leave your home (assuming you have one and don't live out of a shopping basket and sleep under bridges and comment from cyber-cafes - another distinct possiblilty I might add!).- Posted 03/07/07 at 10:25 AM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment
