Despite hopeful headlines, Mideast is bleak

JERUSALEM — 'Optimism" and "opportunity" are the buzzwords these days in the Middle East. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas are both suddenly fond of using them, as are U.S. President George W. Bush and the new regional peace envoy, Tony Blair.
