PAUL Mansell from London, writes: Congratulations on your appointment. I admire your courage in taking on such a challenging positon. You're an inspiration to many people. I'm sure you intend to use your time in helping all Ontarians, not just those with disabilities, however, I hope that you will be able to help people like me by influencing legislation and enforcement of existing legislation. I am confined to a wheelchair and live with severe, chronic pain due to rheumatoid arthritis. I'm not askinig for big changes yet, I'm still working on convincing businesses, medical clinics, schools etc to make small changes by providing ramps, accessible washrooms, automatic doors, cut-away curbs. etc. The basic components necessary for my access to buildings are most often missing and there seems to be no enforcement of bylaws requiring adjustments to buildings. Even at a local hospital's new xray clinic there is no area for wheelchair seating. In many places I'm left sitting outside stores while my family shops. When I'm out alone, I sit in front of doors hoping someone will come along and hold them for me. Every day is a real struggle for me to try to live a life that approaches 'normal' . We still have a long way to go in making this country accessible for people like me. Anything you can do to change this would be appreciated.

Pear Buenafe from Toronto, Canada writes: Congratulations on your new position as Lt. Gov. of Ontario and the Prime advocate for disabled. I rejoice !
I have been on disability pension for 5 yrs. ,and the past 4 yrs., I have been physically disabled. PLEASE advocate on behalf of travelling disabled..specially with the airlines, to be more sensitive to disability issues..and if possible, let staff serving the public to go on 'sensitivity training' every 3 months, as ours is an aging population and many more of us are emerging.
I have been recently subjected to discrimination by AIR CANADA and I have complained to the CHRC....my complaint is still pending. I want my complaint to be a reminder to all that as disabled people, we have 'rights' to and should be treated like everyone else. Please do your best to educate more people on disability issues. More power to you ! Thank you.- Posted 12/09/07 at 11:57 AM EDT | Link to Comment
