Economists gird for parity as dollar tops 97 cents

The Canadian dollar topped 97 cents (U.S.) Friday for the first time in 30 years, riding favourable sentiment in global currency markets that economists believe could put it on par with its American counterpart in a matter of months. Reaching parity with the U.S. dollar for the first time since 1976 would be psychologically satisfying for Canadians, who've endured years of American jokes comparing their multicoloured currency to Monopoly money.
