Why pay for the cow if the milk's almost free?

Quite a few employees at Level Consulting Ltd. were already using Google Inc.'s online applications and Gmail e-mail service, so when the tech giant introduced a business package called Google Apps Premier Edition last February, the company known as the Level was quick to sign up. Running an e-mail system in-house had been a hassle, says Michael Read, the chief technology officer at the Level, a content-management software provider in Vancouver.
