Duhatschek: Johnson coming, Carter going

NHL teams need to finalize their rosters later this afternoon, but in Edmonton, free-agent tryout Anson Carter got the bad news Monday – that a concussion, which he suffered earlier in camp and limited his effectiveness – along with the Oilers’ decision to go with their kids, meant he didn’t earn a contract with one of his former employers.

Carter essentially lost out to Robert Nilsson, son of former NHL star Kent Nilsson, who will open the season on the second line, along with Jarret Stoll and Raffi Torres. For now, anyway, the Oilers will also ice a Kid Line, consisting of Sam Gagner, who signed Monday, plus Andrew Cogliano and Marc-Antoine Pouliot – although Geoff Sanderson is also in the mix for ice time on that unit as well.

The news appears to be better for ex-Leaf, ex-Hab Mike Johnson, who joined the St. Louis Blues on a tryout and appears to have won a spot on the team. Johnson is expected to sign a contract for later today in the $750,000 range, which makes him affordable to a Blues’ team that paid big bucks to both Paul Kariya and Keith Tkachuk this past summer. Kariya’s had a strong exhibition season, but his younger brother Martin, who was also in St. Louis's camp, didn’t make the final roster and was farmed out yesterday.
