Barbara Greene from Brampton, Canada writes: That is an accurate review of the most common sugar substitutes and good advice; however, I'd like to know Leslie's opinion of Whey Low (wheylow.com). This is a natural sugar substitute that tastes almost exactly like sugar and can be substituted for sugar in recipes on a 1:1 basis. It has about 25% of the calories of sugar and is a good alternative for diabetics. It is actually supposed to be good for you. I've been using it for about a year and think it's great! Check it out Leslie please.
  2. My eyes are open, Are yours? from Canada writes: Aspartame gives me migraines. I manage to avoid it in pop and gum, but it bothers me that aspartame is used to sweeten cough syrups and other liquid-based medications. In some instances there are no alternatives, for example, children's acetaminophen preparations. THey all seem to have aspartame.

Splenda also has an unpleasant aftertaste. I'd rather stick with sugar.
  3. cam bird from penticton, Canada writes: Stevia (perrennial herb) is 300 times sweeter than sugar with no gycemic index! When has man made products ever been better for us than natural substances that are in balance with our bodies. Ignor all the cancer and drink your sugar free pops ..you will get sick and they will give you more man made goodies to pretend to make you better ...its all a lie because it all makes someone huge $$$$.
get out the honey jar , that is the sweetener we were intened to use..I hear bees ar having problems getting back to their hives ...to mant electronic waves and radio transmitting blocking their radar back to the hive...when will we listen to the simple lessons of nature !

  4. George Hall from Canada writes: I go for the stevia plant as well...I certainly don't trust a bunch of science geeks cooking up strange conctions in a lab not the ones in the medical establishment who approve them.......stay as natural as possible..
I do believe the labratory chemicals can cause inumerable risks to organs and the nervous system...it is just that the establishment can't recognize the hazards as of yet
  5. Common Sense from Canada writes: George Hall, the establishment is well aware of the effects of aspartame on rats. They know exactly how bad it can be for humans. Why is it commonly used now? Because after several rejections by the FDA, over several years and attempts, it was finally approved during the Reagan administration some twenty-odd years ago. Wanna know why? Donald Rumsfeld was the COO of the manufacturer. Cheney's part of that whole story too. Guess who got rich because of it?
