  1. Hugh Draper from Canada writes: Compact camera technology has risen stupendously; so the majority of consumers no longer have to purchase complex SLRs that require professional maintainance to get phenominal pictures of family picnics, pets and children's swim meets etc.
  2. Lucien Qui Parle from Vancouver, Canada writes: Mr. Draper, I disagree.

First, SLR's don't require more professional maintenance than compacts, except that the sensors may need cleaning once or twice throughout it's use.

More importantly, compacts have not come as far as you think. The average consumer, with only basic camera knowledge, tends to way the wrong aspects; for example, many customers come into my camera shop and say they want at least '10 megapixels.'

Not only is the number of megapixels only one of many, many factors that detirmine image quality, but if you go too high in resolution, it can actually DETRACT from image quality in other ways.

SLR's use much larger sensors and much more sophisticated focusing and processing mechanisms than compact cameras. The result is that they give phenomenal photos in ALL situations, not just out-doors in the sun (as with many compacts).
